Al-Bashir for Human Rights Council…What the Hell is the UN Thinking?

It’s time to clean up the UN

Before I ever step foot out of bed in the morning, I reach under my pillow and grab my iPhone.  What?  Angelina Jolie sleeps with a gun under her pillow, I sleep with an iPhone.  I wholly embrace my nerdiness.  But I begin reading all the headlines and stories that popped up over the night.

I read one story this morning and thought, I’m reading this wrong. I’m still asleep.  And since I’m still in bed, the cat decides to begin to systematically throwing things off the night stand, including my glasses, so I’ll get up and feed him.  It happens every single morning.  Then I move into what I call the “Velma” stage of the morning.  Crawling around on the floor trying to find my glasses.  Jinkies, yes, I’m that blind.

Feed cats. Make coffee. Look up story…yep I read it right.

The UN is set to elect Omar al-Bashir to the United Nations Human Rights Council.  Now if you don’t know who al-Bashir is, I bet I can say one word and you will immediately know.  Ever heard of Darfur?

The genocide that happened in Darfur in the Sudan is atrocious.  Omar al-Bashir is the mass-murdering President of Sudan.  The Darfur conflict began around 2003 and supposedly came to a conclusion around 2010 when a peace agreement was signed.  Which doesn’t matter becasue it’s still going.  Another new story just this morning reports 25,000 people are fleeing a refugee camp to escape the fighting.

A Sudanese militia group composed mainly of the official Sudanese military and police, called the Janjaweed, was said to be provided financial assistance and weapons to fight against the rebel armies.  The Sudan Government publicly denied this claim, but evidence is still overwhelming.

The number of deaths are not known.  Some say the Janjaweed murdered over 400,000 thousand innocent people.

Al-Bashir was accused of genocide and crimes against humanity and war crimes for the actions in the Darfur region, by the International Criminal Court.  An arrest warrant was issued but eventually it was ruled there was insufficient evidence for prosecution.

And sadly, after winning an appeal by the prosecution in 2010, “the Court held that there was indeed sufficient evidence for charges of genocide to be brought and issued a second warrant containing three separate counts. The new warrant, as with the first, will be delivered to the Sudanese government, which is unlikely to execute it.”

That makes me sick! They have left the power in the hands of the Sudanese Government, the very government al-Bashir controls.

Now, not only has the UN not done anything to stop this man’s crimes against humanity, they now have elected him to the Human Rights Council.  Are you effing kidding me?  (I said the real f-word out loud just now!)   The famed Wikileaks revealed massive amounts of corruption and embezzlement from the Sudanese President.

All that to say, he’s one seriously bad dude.  And anyone accused of commiting genocide should probably NOT be elected to the Human Rights Council.  What the hell is happening at the UN?  Are they all drunk?

Do you remember the movie Independence Day with Will Smith?  The movie about the aliens showing up and positioning themselves over all of the worlds landmarks.  (Why don’t they ever just blow up Joe Schmo’s house?  Why is it the Empire State, White House, and Eiffel Tower….always?)

Well, at some point, one of the characters makes the observation that he doesn’t think they are here on friendly terms. But they are instead positioning themselves to destroy us.

I can’t help but question why the UN continues to make shocking choices like this but it feels like the cheesy movie, they seem to be positioning themselves.   “UN Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer, who compared the development to putting Jack the Ripper in charge of a women’s shelter. “For how long must we have the inmates running the asylum?”

His election is all but assured because there has been little opposition.  Uh, where the hell is our President?  It’s reported that the President has only offered a “tepid” response.  US lawmakers are calling for withdrawal from the UN Council.  Obama had us rejoin the council in 2009 after the UN made it more difficult for “despots” to serve there.  So much for that.

The UN is out of control.  And why we give them our money and support is beyond me.  If our money is going to support a man who murders innocent people, including women and children, how can we possibly support that council and the UN with a clear conscience?

I know, I think our Government should have some sort of character and stand up for what is right.  Silly me.
